Matt wanted to create a truly memorable moment for Joy, choosing a stunning mountain location that would reflect their fun and adventurous relationship. Max Patch, perched on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, offered the perfect backdrop! Known for its sweeping mountain views and open fields, it was an ideal spot for their surprise proposal! We were blessed to witness firsthand the beauty of the moment, the chemistry between Matt and Joy, and the unexpected challenges that made the experience even more unique.
Matt’s vision was clear: he wanted a beautiful mountain setting that would be accessible during this time of year. Max Patch fit the bill perfectly. For anyone that's never been to this location, it's a dream to shoot at for photographers, and iconic among hikers and adventure seekers just wanting to catch a mountain sunset! This open grassy bald is famous for its panoramic views of the Appalachian Mountains, offering layers of ridges that stretch into the distance. The area is especially popular for engagement sessions and elopements! The location’s natural beauty was a key factor, but so was its accessibility. Max Patch’s trails remain open even during off peak seasons, making it a reliable choice for outdoor occasions like this. We have seen the road up to Max Patch (which is gravel for a good chunk of time) complete covered in snow and at time rutted out, so we always recommend a car with good ground clearance when conditions are good, and AWD or 4x4 if things get snowy during the winter! Matt’s plan was to surprise Joy with the proposal during a casual hike, blending their love for adventure with a little romance.
Like all of our surprise proposal sessions, we had a plan in place with everything timed out, but Matt texted us before we arrived to let us know he would be getting there earlier than anticipated the way everything worked out. Would't you know, we were two cars behind him and Joy as we made our way up the gravel mountain road to the trailhead. Usually we like to arrive before our couples do for these so we can stage a spot and get set up with all of our gear. For this one, we had to adjust. Once we parked we saw Matt and Joy begin the short hike up to the spot we had planned on using. We gave just enough distance not to set off any alarms but we kept them in sight as we made the trek up behind them. As we all reached the first opening, we veered off to the left and it gave us just enough time to set up as these cuties took a few selfies and landscape shots. As expected, their surprise proposal itself was a highlight! Matt’s excitement mixed with Joy’s genuine shock and happiness created a joyful atmosphere that radiated throughout their entire session!
Of course, what's a good love story without a little bit of drama? Just as we were arriving to the session, we encountered a curveball. Max Patch was undergoing a controlled burn, a forest management practice designed to reduce wildfire risks and promote healthy ecosystems. The controlled burn had blackened much (if not all) of the ground around us, leaving the landscape looking charred and stark. Despite this, the trails remained open and untouched, providing paths for Matt and Joy to explore. The blackened terrain added a unique contrast to the vibrant mountain layers in the distance. Rather than letting this challenge dampen their spirits, Matt and Joy embraced the unique setting. Their positive attitude and focus on each other made the photos even more powerful and a collection of beautiful memories they won't soon forget! Congrats to Matt and Joy and we hope you all enjoy following along!
